Survey Results

The visualizations are based on the information collected during the landscaping activity conducted as part of the NI4OS-Europe project. All graphs are based on 575 complete responses collected in the survey. The stakeholder map relies on the information provided by the project partners.

EOSC – How familiar are you with EOSC (European Open Science Cloud)?

The landscaping survey has found that the stakeholders in the partner countries are generally not very familiar with EOSC: 60% are either unfamiliar or not very familiar with EOSC. Research supporters and OS facilitators are the most familiar with EOSC: about 60% of research supporters and 90% of OS facilitators are either familiar or very familiar with EOSC. In turn, 70% of research creators and 80% of research consumers are either unfamiliar of not very familiar with EOSC.

The largest number of responses came from Moldova (95) and Croatia (76). In terms of absolute numbers, these two countries have both the greatest number of stakeholders familiar or very familiar with EOSC (Moldova 27; Croatia 22) and stakeholders unfamiliar or not very familiar with EOSC (Moldova 68; Croatia 54). In terms of percentages, Greece and Georgia have the highest share of stakeholders familiar or very familiar with EOSC – around 60%. At the same time, Bulgaria has the greatest share of stakeholders who are very familiar with EOSC – around 25%.

FAIR – How familiar are you with the concept of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) regarding data?

The stakeholders in the partner countries are generally not very familiar with FAIR: nearly 50% are either unfamiliar or not very familiar with FAIR. As expected, Research supporters and OS facilitators are the most familiar with the concept: more than 70% of research supporters and all OS facilitators are either familiar or very familiar with FAIR principles.

As the largest number of responses came from Moldova and Croatia, these two countries have both the greatest number of stakeholders familiar or very familiar with the concept of FAIR (Moldova 35; Croatia 33) and those unfamiliar or not very familiar with FAIR (Moldova 60; Croatia 43). In terms of percentages, familiarity with FAIR is the highest in Georgia (75%), Slovenia (68%), Cyprus (67%) and Greece (63%). Greece has the highest share of stakeholders who are very familiar with the concept of FAIR (36.7%). At the same time, more than 80% of stakeholders in Albania are unfamiliar or not very familiar with FAIR.

FAIR – In your opinion, what particular areas of training, support or advice, researchers and support staff need in relation to making data FAIR?

Survey results show a strong need for training in all FAIR-related areas: about 90% of respondents have said that training is either needed or much needed. Training others (including PhD candidates) slightly stands out as the priority area for training.

Existing – Does your organization provide support and training in the following areas?

Based on the survey results, more than 60% of the respondents do provide training for their services. Nearly half of them already provide training about intellectual property rights and copyright. Another major area covered by training are repositories (nearly 40% of respondents already provide training in this area). About 60% of respondents do not provide training related to research data but nearly 35% of them plan to do this in future.

EOSC Concept Cloud for South-East Europe

Less than 40% of the respondents answered the open-ended question “What do you expect from EOSC?”. Their answers were analyzed to extract distinct concepts, which were further normalized. The word cloud shows the most frequent concepts per stakeholder group. Only the concepts mentioned more than two times are shown.
